Locating your Child's Bedroom |
When the proper orientation of the house, including the location of living and working areas, has been determined by the Natal Star of the owner, the choice of bedrooms for children should accord with the attributes as outlined below. |

Orienting the Desk |
Your child's desk should be placed in that sector of the bedroom that corresponds to his or her desired occupation as outlined below. For example, if a child wishes to be a doctor someday, his or her desk should rest against the southwest wall. Furthermore, parents can help their children's studies by placing their desks in the learning area of their bedrooms (northeast, see below). |

Orienting the Bed |
A person's bed should be placed in the sector which corresponds to the life situation which needs emphasis (see below). If an individual has contracted a serious illness, it is possible to focus vital qi on the afflicted area by placing the sick bed in the portion of the bedroom that corresponds to that body part.
For example, marriage ties can be enhanced by placing the nuptial bed in the marriage position of the bedroom (southwest). A childless couple can enhance their chances for children by sleeping in the western quadrant of the master bedroom. If someone needs help solving a life-threatening situation, the bed can be moved to the northwest octant. To assist the cure of an ailment of the stomach, the sick bed should be placed in the belly position of the bedroom (southwest). |

Since most rooms are square or rectangular, it is sometimes awkward to orient a room from the standpoint of an octagon. When the wall does not conform to the desired configuration, it is necessary to pivot the piece of furniture so that its axis lies within the 45 degrees of the appropriate octant. The axis of a bed is a line passing from foot to headboard, while the axis of a desk is the line of sight of the person seated. It is even more difficult to orient the proper bedroom for each child, especially if one is working from an existing residence. If the appropriate bedroom according to the table above cannot be obtained, then try to choose a room according to the child's natal star. If this also is impossible, then as a last resort the resulting room should be painted the color of the child's natal qi. |
When Spouses have Incompatible Qi |
Spouses whose natal qi is incompatible (that is, one is born in an Eastern hall and the other in a Western hall) will have difficulty maximizing each other's qi flows. Two remedies are available, although neither is a foolproof solution to the problem of incompatible birthdates.
1. Fengshui orientation is designed to maintain or augment the fortunes of the family, and the family's well-being is dependent mainly on the health of the breadwinner. So the spouse who is the main source of the family's livelihood is the one whose natal qi should predominate. With this in mind, a couple should orient the bedroom in a sector of the house that corresponds to a hall auspicious for the breadwinner. Then the bed should be oriented in a sector of the bedroom that corresponds to a direction auspicious for the other spouse.
2. If neither spouse is the predominant breadwinner, another solution is recommended. Each spouse has four lucky and four unlucky directions; furthermore, there are degrees of auspice such that a given direction while bad, is not as bad as another, or while good, is not as good as another. It is therefore possible to choose a sector of the house that avoids the worst misfortune for one spouse while simultaneously attaining only minimum good fortune for the other. The following table identifies each of the Nine Stars and its corresponding auspice (from greatest fortune to greatest misfortune). After obtaining Master Ten's readings for each spouse plot the relative auspices on a chart and then choose the sector for the couple's bedroom that matches auspices from the center of the chart (preferably in the "small" or "lesser" categories). Once the appropriate direction is located, then the bed may be oriented according to the first remedy above. At this time, the spouse whose bedroom is unlucky gets the lucky bed!.

Controlling the Flow of Sha, or Harmful Qi |
In the course of choosing a building site it is inevitable that various limitations will be met that cannot be resolved by adjusting the orientation of the building or the room within. This is especially the case in the modern urban environment where the individual has little control over the disposition of the neighborhood. Since the art of Fengshui is basically the measurement and manipulation of the flow of qi, the Chinese over the millennia have developed efficacious methods for deflecting and rechanneling harmful qi (called sha).
Harmful qi is of various kinds. In general qi that represents a balance between yin and yang is auspicious, whereas imbalanced qi--that which contains either too much yang or too much yin, is inauspicious. For example, rapid qi is inauspicious (fast flowing water, high winds), and so is torpid qi (swamps, doldrums). Any natural or artificial feature which would cause the flow of qi to become imbalanced is inappropriate. For example, a straight road or path leading to the front door of a house would allow the ingress and egress of qi to be too rapid. A means of breaking up this rapid flow is necessary if bad fortune is to be avoided. Rapid qi, such as that created by the barrel-like “gun” of a straight road aimed at a front door, can be moderated by bells or chimes hung at the entrance, or reflected by mirrors flanking the door. On the other hand, it is inadvisable to build a house with the entrance directly facing a monolithic feature such as a large tree, a cliff face, or a taller building, because the flow of qi would be slowed too extensively. A means of opening up the obstructed qi is necessary, or misfortune for the residents of such a house is probable. |
